Woodhouse Group was the Construction Manager for the adaptive reuse of the 25,000 sq. ft. former Schreiter’s Home Furnishings building in Downtown Kitchener for tech startup Thalmic Labs (formerly North, now occupied by Google Inc). This landmark was completely renovated to let the building’s historic character shine as brick-and-beam office space with exposed ceilings and masonry, heavy timber columns, large windows, and refinished wood floors.
The scope of work involved a full interior demolition and restoration, aimed at preserving the building’s timber frame while making structural updates like reinforcing beams with steel channels. Modern amenities were carefully integrated, including a new elevator, glass-walled meeting rooms, 15 updated washrooms, exposed mechanical, leveled concrete main floor, and multi-level exit stairwells. Installing five-layer rubber flooring minimized noise transfer. Exterior improvements included a new roof, windows, and a fresh coat of paint.
